Kai Sushi bar at Marsabit Plaza on Ngong road is the newest kid on the Japanese restaurant block and they are not here to play!
The Kai Sushi Bar Launch had in attendance government of Japan representatives, partners and a number of lifestyle influencers including the host of the event Jay Takeapic and influencers/content creators such as Joy Kendi, Sheila Mwanyigha, Kate Kendy and half of Over25 Miss Tiramisu and Lorna Gatabaki, Brian Babu and others.
Did you know there are 8000 stores worldwide that have been certified as Japanese Food Supporter Stores? Well, Kai Sushi Bar was awarded that certification by JETRO, a Japanese Government agency, at the launch and the reason it is such a big deal is because Kai Sushi Bar is THE ONLY ONE in Africa to receive this certification.
The event was held in a bid to promote Japanese cuisine in Kenya. We don’t know about you but when we hear Japanese cuisine we immediately associate it with health. This is because Japanese food is synonymous with various vegetables and soybeans. It is no wonder that the oldest person in the world happens to hail from Japan.
According to a recent survey conducted by JETRO among 500 male and female Kenyans in Nairobi, only about 10% of the respondents had eaten Japanese food, and over 90% of Kenyans have never taken Japanese food. JETRO feels the need to change those statistics. Therefore, in order to promote Japanese food as healthy food in Kenya, JETRO has decided to support Japanese restaurants that meet the criteria by issuing a certificate and Kai has kicked it off here in Africa.
Now let’s get to the meat of it, pun intended. Kai Sushi Bar served us some delectable food, absolute chef’s kiss. Our stylenerdsjournal guest thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She channeled her inner foodie and this is her review of the dishes she sampled;
- The sushi platter:
Absolutely loved it. Even though I was fighting with the chopsticks . The calamari was really nice, could’ve used a bit of salt but ??
The rolls were insane ??
The platter was well served.
- Omelette:
Loved them but were a bit nauseating past 1 &1/2 serving .
Well served but could use some garnish.
- Tofu:
Absolutely uh-uh. Well presented and the ingredients were well proportioned
- Chicken Skewers:
Tasty and flavours were well balanced
- The sailors/shots:
Absolutely loved the juice infused shots . Dangerously amazing. Great to down and well mixed & served.
- The dessert:
My tastebuds fought for their lives while still enjoying it lowkey. I think they can do away with the beans but the cereals and the ice cream ??.
Well served and presented.
With that review, it is obvious you cannot skip the sushi platter. We’re happy to dive into the menu that you can find online on www.kai.co.ke. The prices are definitely very pocket friendly, the variety of foods and drinks range from bitings to fillers so there’s something for everyone.
There is variety in the drinks too. However, you know you cannot step into a Japanese food spot and not order sake, let’s not debate on that; sake is a must have.
Other than the food and great company chilling and vibing, a key stand out for us was that Kai Sushi Bar is in a space that is curated for restaurants to rent as kitchen spaces. How cool is that!
Kai Sushi also has partnered with various companies including Kokkoman, the best soy sauce in the market. Those who attended the launch left with goodie bags from Kokkoman.
Talking of partnerships, Kai Sushi bar has Sushi on the go that you can pick up from select Chandarana and Carrefour supermarkets. You can also order Kai Sushi cuisine from jumia foods, uber eats and yum.co.ke for deliveries to your doorstep.
We will definitely be ordering something that sounded interesting on the menu; the Ebi Katsu. Let nobody say we don’t try new things. We shall report back here and let you know how it was. All in all, sign stylenerdsjournal up as Kai Sushi Bar regulars because it was love at first bite!
