Known as the polyester decade because of the synthetic fiber’s popularity, the 1970s were a time of social change, disco anthems, and the most iconic fashion. Just as effortlessly as the Swinging Sixties turned into the psychedelic 1970s, all of us who walked into the doors at the 70s Swing Party hosted by YMLife were taken to a world of hippies, disco queens, retro nerds, flower-power outfits, prints on prints and perfectly coiffed hair and fros.
The 7os was a period when women in Kenya chose who they could be and how they wanted to dress. It’s no wonder YMlife chose 70s Swing as the theme for the most unforgettable party of 2022 and yes, the dress code was a massive hit!
Mandatory Dresscode: Psychedelic
Just as many Kenyan women experimented with style and wore what they desired, party goers at the YM life 70s Swing Party really came correct with the mandatory 70s theme. Here’s a compilation of Looks We Loved:
Muthoni of YM Life glitzed and glammed with her all-green feathered top and sequined ombre bellbottoms. An ode to Tusker Malt perhaps? We love it!
Print on Print ensemble with Elton John sunnies was a look Diane Nthurima rocked so well.
Capital FM’s Angela and Miano rocked the night with their statement ensembles.
Kimanzi and Filbert doing that play on color to close this ‘Looks We Loved’ segment.
Brian Babu showed us why he is a stylist with his dashingly 70s fit.
We loved the promo videos that teased us and we had no choice but to attend this spectacularly organized event that screamed STYLE.
The Endo Sisters
YMlife had a promo video featuring the Endo sisters styled by Lady Mandy, hair by Corrine, and creative direction by YM life’s very own creative director Muthoni.
Sequined mini dress, shimmy bell bottoms, Knee-high boots, big curly hair for Yvonne, and bone straight middle-parted hair on Patti that was a go-to style in the 70s had the sisters looking like they just walked out of a set of soul train.
The production team for the promo video was pure talent. Catch 2endos feature in YmLifes retrospective edition.
The Groove Train Conductors
We were blessed with the most amazing performance by Wakadinali who brought some flair to the event, how could they not? They were dressed by celebrity stylist Brian Babu – #babufied -assisted by LebanWeru. The iconic Fros synonymous with the 70s that the boys rocked were courtesy of Corrine; a celebrity hairstylist.
A 12/10
Hand me my platform shoes and comb out that afro because stylenerdsjournal is ready for the next 70s show by YMlife because one was just not enough. The music at the party was so perfectly 7os, so disco, psychedelic to say the least!
Stylenerdsjournal gives ALL looks at the 70s swing party by YMLife a 12/10. You just had to be there! To wrap up this piece, It was Peter Dundas who said “Fashion is about being fearless. Wear things you love but don’t worry about them fitting together” in an article by porter.com about fashion, style, sex, and the 70s.
Itís difficult to find experienced people in this particular topic, but you seem like you know what youíre talking about! Thanks
Thank you.
